7 Common Causes of Tinnitus, and How to Get Help Today

Tinnitus, a condition characterized by ringing, buzzing, humming, and other noises in the ears without any external source, can be quite bothersome. It is often associated with an underlying health issue, and finding relief is essential for those experiencing it. In this article, we will explore seven common causes of tinnitus and discuss how to seek help for this distressing condition.

1. Ear Infection

An ear infection, also known as otitis, occurs when the inner and/or outer parts of the ear become inflamed. This inflammation can lead to ringing, buzzing, and pain in the ear. Ear infections are usually caused by viruses like the flu and cold, or bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Seeking treatment for the ear infection can often help alleviate tinnitus symptoms.

2. Hearing Loss

Hearing loss, whether age-related or due to acoustic trauma, is another common cause of tinnitus. Presbycusis, the gradual hearing loss that often comes with age, happens when the tiny hair cells inside the inner ear become damaged or die. Tinnitus frequently accompanies age-related hearing loss.

3. Earwax Buildup

Earwax is essential for protecting the ear canal from bacteria, insects, and water while also cleaning and lubricating the ear. However, excessive earwax buildup can cause irritation, tinnitus, and even hearing loss. Proper practices for safe earwax removal include visiting a doctor or using earwax softeners or syringes to irrigate the ears.

4. Exposure to Loud Noise

Exposure to loud noise, such as that from firearms, power tools, or loud music, can lead to short- or long-term tinnitus. Attending a loud rock concert may cause temporary tinnitus, while consistent exposure to loud machinery without hearing protection can result in long-term tinnitus.

5. Ménière Disease

Ménière disease is an inner ear disorder linked to high fluid pressure in the inner ear. It may be associated with ear infections, head injuries, allergies, smoking, and alcohol use. Ménière disease often causes vertigo in addition to tinnitus. While there is no known cure for this condition, adopting a healthier lifestyle, like quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake, may help alleviate symptoms.

6. TMJ Disorders

Temporomandibular joint and muscle (TMJ) disorders refer to a group of conditions causing jaw pain and dysfunction. These disorders can also lead to symptoms like earache, tinnitus, headache, and difficulty with chewing.

7. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Tinnitus can be caused by problems with the eustachian tube, the tube that connects the middle ear and throat. Eustachian tube dysfunction occurs when the tube becomes swollen and remains expanded, causing the ear to feel full. Alongside tinnitus, other symptoms may include muffled or reduced hearing, ear pain, and balance issues.
