Top Nutritionists Reveal: 12 Foods You Should Never Refrigerate
Refrigerators are a common household appliance, and most of us use them to keep our food fresh. However, not all foods benefit from the cold, dry environment inside the fridge. In fact, some foods can lose their flavor, texture, or nutritional value when refrigerated. In this article, we’ll explore the top 12 foods that nutritionists recommend not refrigerating to maintain their quality.
Why Some Foods Shouldn’t Be Refrigerated
Before we dive into the list, it’s essential to understand why certain foods should avoid the fridge. Refrigeration can alter the taste, texture, and nutritional content of specific items. Additionally, the cold environment might not be suitable for foods that require a bit of humidity or need to ripen.
1.Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a prime example of a food that should never be refrigerated. The cold temperature can break down their cell walls, causing a mealy texture and dull flavor. Instead, store tomatoes at room temperature and use them within a week.
2.Potatoes
Refrigerating potatoes can lead to the conversion of their starches into sugars, resulting in a gritty texture and off-putting taste. Keep potatoes in a cool, dark place with good ventilation to maintain their quality.
3.Onions
Onions should be stored in a cool, dry place, but not in the fridge. The excess moisture in the refrigerator can cause onions to become soft and moldy. Store them in a basket or a mesh bag for proper air circulation.
4.Honey
Honey is a natural preservative and doesn’t need refrigeration. In fact, refrigeration can cause it to crystallize. Keep your honey at room temperature, and it will remain liquid and delicious.
5.Avocado
Avocado lovers, take note! Refrigerating avocados can hinder their ripening process and lead to a loss of flavor and texture. Store unripe avocados on the counter until they ripen, then move them to the fridge if needed.
6.Bread
Storing bread in the fridge can make it go stale faster. The cold temperature accelerates the crystallization of its starches. Keep your bread in a bread box or a cool, dry pantry to keep it soft and fresh.
7.Coffee
Coffee beans and grounds should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. The fridge can introduce moisture and odors, affecting the flavor of your coffee.
8.Garlic
Refrigerating garlic can lead to sprouting and a bitter taste. Store garlic bulbs in a cool, dry place with good air circulation.
9.Berries
Berries are prone to mold when exposed to moisture, so avoid washing them until you’re ready to eat. Store them in a container lined with paper towels to absorb excess moisture, but not in the fridge.
10.Melons
Refrigerating melons can cause a loss of antioxidants and flavor. Keep them on the counter until they’re ripe, then transfer them to the fridge if you have leftovers.
11.Herbs
Fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, and parsley should be stored in a glass of water on the counter. They can wilt quickly in the fridge.
12.Olive Oil
Olive oil doesn’t need refrigeration and can even solidify in cold temperatures. Keep it in a cool, dark place to maintain its liquid form and flavor.
In summary, understanding which foods to refrigerate and which to keep out of the cold can significantly impact the taste, texture, and nutritional value of your meals. By following the advice of nutritionists and keeping these 12 foods at the right temperature, you can ensure that your dishes are always at their best.

I didn’t know your not to put berries in the frig. I always wash them and and put them in the frig. Thank you for the information.
Funny. I already do all these things. I find that if I shop frequently, and use the food expediently, the food is fresh and does not need refrigeration.

Why are foods in the cold or wet section if they should not be refrigerated?
Thank you helpful
With some exceptions, I don’t find these suggestions to be particularly useful. I don’t store tomatoes, onions or fresh garlic in the frige but most other things I do because they spoil very quickly if left at room temperature & within 2-3 days would need to be thrown out.
I didn’t know that about berries why do they sell them in the refrigerator section then
